We decided to make the most of the two public holidays over Christmas to go away for the night, and Mudgee has been on the to-do list for a while!
We booked a last-minute room at the Horatio Suites Motel and arrived just after Check-In was open. It was a warm day but we decided to walk into the town centre as there looked like there were plenty of options to eat and drink. Unfortunately a lot of places were closed for the public holiday, but Kelly’s Irish Pub saved the day. We had a drink and a bite to eat there, and both were pretty delicious!
We had a walk around the town centre, admiring the heritage buildings before heading back to the hotel to freshen up.
Dinner options were limited, but we did find that the Ori Kitchen at the Oriental Hotel was both open and well reviewed. The food didn’t disappoint and I only wish I had saved room for a dessert from the dessert cabinet as everything looked delicious!
On day 2 we decided to head back into the town and we had a bit more luck with breakfast options. We chose Alby & Esthers, and it was a good job we arrived when we did else we would have had to wait for a table. They also had a some nice looking slice that we just had to take away with us for breakfast pudding!
We wandered through the town again and popped into some of the shops that we had spotted the previous day that were now open.
Once we were done, we hopped in the car and drove to Gulgong, passed all the wineries and the cheese shop (unfortunately all closed).
The town itself was really pretty, a 19th-century gold rush town, that still has a historic old theatre which is apparently worth a visit (although closed when we were there). The town was also on the original $10 note!
We stopped for a coffee and a cake at the Butcher’s Shop Café, before setting off back to Forbes. I’m definitely keen to head back to this area for a foodie visit on a non public holiday!
We had a quick stop for a drink in Molong on route, but had the same issue – the sweet shop and café that we had visited there previously was closed down, and only the IGA was open. Still, a very pretty town to drive through though!
